How on earth did Porsche become such a well known and sought after luxury brand that it is today? Did the Porsche Panamera bring the name into the big league alone? So get all your spreadsheets ready because we will be looking at how Porsche redefined luxury forever.

Form meets function.

The new word of the day is Horological. Horology is the study of the measurement of time.

Luxury car brands are known for collaborating with watch makers to release high quality watches that take inspiration from cars. But there is no other company that has dived into horology the way Porsche did.

Porsche has completely reshaped the watch industry with their dedication and craftsmanship. How did they do this you might ask? By joining both function and form. This is the design philosophy of Bauhaus. They say that an object’s form cannot be separated from the object’s function and this applies the other way around also.

Ferdinand couldn’t just settle for making cars alone. He wanted to take his design skills to the next level.
He left his family business to pursue his dream and that’s when he established Porsche Design. What’s his very first product you say? It was a wrist watch.

Nobody before 1972 wore a black wristwatch or even bothered to wear a black one to be exact. Ferdinand saw all the shiny gold or even some leather watches and he felt like something was lacking. His first creation was an instant hit, a black steel watch and bracelet.

He didn’t think of any fancy names. He called his wristwatch the Chronograph. The design of the watch took inspiration from airplane gauges.

You should be able to tell the time with just a quick glance on an analogue watch. The black steel face along with the white markers gave a beautiful contrast that made this much easier.

The design was amazing and timeless. The watch stood the test of time and still looked just as fresh as it did 40 years ago as it does now!
